Tasmanian Tiger Myrtle
Botanical Name: Nothofagus Cunninghamii
A slow growing tree reaching a maximum height of 30 or 40 metres, the Myrtle tree can live for five hundred years. Nothofagus cunninghamii, does not resemble the European Myrtle, and is not related. It became known as "Myrtle" only through common usage of the early timbermen. Myrtle is a beautiful timber with deep rich colours of red, orange, brown and also pink. Myrtle produces beautiful burlwood and also Tiger Myrtle which is created by spalting. Tasmanian Tiger Myrtle and Red Myrtle are quickly becoming highly sought after tonewoods. Tiger Myrtle is a superb tonewood.
