Botanical Name: ( Catalpa spp. C. speciosa and C. bignonioides)
There are a total of only eleven species worldwide, with only two species—Northern Catalpa and Southern Catalpa (C. speciosa and C. bignonioides, respectively)—native to North America.
Very similar looking to White Oak, very resonant and responsive, clear fundamentals and crystalline trebles, not overtone-laden. Catalpa is a soft and light wood. Catalpa has been used in traditional Chinese instruments. Bruce Sexauer built a guitar of all Catalpa - top, back, sides and neck. He loves the wood.
